July 24   Day 30

Today, one month to the day after we left Maine, we pulled into Eagle River, Alaska.  We drove directly to the real estate agent’s, drove out to view a house, and within 30 minutes of arriving in town, had a home to move into.

It’s 6 miles up in the mountains; the altitude is about 1400 feet.  The road up is winding and very steep in places and should be interesting in winter.  The view is to die for, with plenty of windows.  It also has plenty of room and no close neighbors.

It was late, so we stayed one more night in a motel, the Eagle River Motel, and will sign the lease tomorrow.

July 25   Day 31

Spent most of the day today running around getting all the utilities put into our names, getting mail delivery, and getting internet access (a DSL line, no less!!!  I had to move to Alaska to get something better than a 28.8K dial-up!)

Made it back over to the real estate agent’s to sign the lease and pick up the keys.  We ended up at Fred Meyer, Alaska’s answer to Wal-Mart (but nicer).  Got some things for the house and some food for supper, then went home to our house.  Opened the bottle of champagne.

July 27   Day 33

Spent the afternoon getting the camper off the truck, so I guess the trip is officially over and we’re now residents of Eagle River, Alaska.  It’s a good feeling.  As I said at my going away party, “this is my mid-life crisis… I planned for it, I worked for it, I embrace it, I’m looking forward to it and by God I’m going to enjoy it!”  And so far, I am!!!

View from the new house.   Pictures can’t due it justice.  These aren’t small mountains!
